Basic First Aid Tips You’ll Actually Use

Basic first aid

First aid is the initial care given to a sick or injured person before receiving full medical treatment. In some cases, first aid may be the only care you need to recover. While in others, these basic first aid tips will keep you safe until emergency services arrive.

Knowledge of first aid is essential in treating basic injuries to avoid permanent damage and long-term disabilities. To help you prepare, we compiled a list of First Aid procedures you can actually use for common injuries.

  1. How to Treat a Nosebleed

Nosebleeds are a common occurrence that may look scary, but they are rarely serious. It is important to remain calm, especially if it involves a child to not cause panic.

The first thing to remember with nosebleeds is that even though they are scary, they are rarely serious. It is important to stay calm, especially if the person with a nosebleed is a child, to not cause panic.

To stop a nosebleed, keep the person in an upright position with their health tilted slightly forward. Pinch the soft, lower part of the nose and firmly hold it for ten minutes. If after ten minutes the bleeding persists, repeat the following steps.

  • First Aid for Sprains

A sprain refers to an injury to the ligaments, which are the tough bands of fibrous tissues that hold bones, cartilage, and joints together. Falling, twisting, or violent wrenching, which results in overstretching or tears in the ligament can cause sprains. The most commonplace for sprains are ankles and wrists.

Mild sprains can often be treated at home. First aid for sprains involves the acronym RICE: rest, ice, compression, and elevation.

  • How to Treat a Burn

Burn treatment starts by stopping the burning process. Immediately move away from the source of heat that causes burns, whether it is electricity, chemicals, and hot water. Those who are affected by sunburns may cover up or go inside to avoid further exposure.

The severity of a burn and its first aid treatment will be based on the depth and size of the injury. Refer to our blog section to know the classifications of burns.

  • First Aid for Choking

Choking from an obstructed airway can be a life-threatening emergency. It can make a person lose consciousness and even die if the obstruction is not removed. It is important to remember that choking first aid for babies is different for toddlers and adults.

Perform Heimlich maneuver or abdominal thrust to an adult who may be choking. Place your fist slightly above the person’s navel, grab your fist with the other hand and bend over. Perform five abdominal thrusts/ Repeat cycle until you successfully dislodge the blocker and the person can breathe normally.

  • Perform CPR and AED use

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is probably the most important of all. If someone is in sudden cardiac arrest and CPR is not performed within the first few minutes, the person can die. Performing CPR and use of a defibrillator can increase the person’s chance of survival.

Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are available in many public areas and businesses. These devices help restart the heart by delivering a shock in a sudden cardiac arrest. First aid training will teach you how to perform CPR and use AED in case of emergency.

These first aid tips do not substitute calling Triple Zero or seeking professional help. Still, it is good to have these skills to help you overcome a medical crisis. The best way to prepare for emergencies is to get a formal First Aid course.
