Advanced First Aid: What is it, and why do I need it?
An introductory first aid training course is a great way to equip yourself with vital first aid skills and prepare for a medical emergency. They provide you with the know-how to respond to more commonplace injuries and illnesses. But they don’t prepare you for every eventuality – they’re designed to cover the fundamentals. With more complex medical conditions, basic first aid training might teach you enough that you can “get by” until qualified medical assistance arrives. Still, there are times when more detailed first aid knowledge could prevent serious and long-term harm or even death.
Fortunately, basic first aid training is far from the only option on the market. Doing an Advanced First Aid training course provides you with all the essentials for providing first aid. But it also covers additional topics you might need in an emergency, such as crushing injuries, substance abuse, mental health first aid (MHFA), and first aid for the elderly. HLTAID014 Provide Advanced First Aid is the most advanced and comprehensive first aid qualification available to non-medical professionals.
- A Trainer-led demonstration that focuses on the uses of key equipment, skills, and techniques used in resuscitation and oxygen therapy.
- The chance to practise with the equipment, techniques and skills used in resuscitation, assisted and supervised by the trainer and including the opportunity to ask questions.
- Various practical assessments, including role-plays, observations, class debriefs, and written and verbal incident reports.
HLTAID006 is now HLTAID014
Until 2020, the highest benchmark for CPR and oxygen therapy first aid training was HLTAID007 Provide Advanced Resuscitation. HLTAID007, defined by the National Register on Vocational Education and Training (training.gov.au), has been superseded by the HLTAID015 course. In any situation or work context where HLTAID007 training was previously required, HLTAID015 is now the standard – even when older workplace documentation specifically refers to HLTAID007.
The updated standard includes the following qualifications as part of the course:
HLTAID009 – Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) (previously HLTAID001) HLTAID015 – Provide Advanced-Resuscitation and Oxygen Therapy (previously HLTAID007)
First Aid Training Course Requirements
