You’ve enrolled yourself in a CPR certification, but you’re not quite sure what to expect. Granted, HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation training could be one of the most important courses you will ever take in your life.

Should you find yourself in an emergency, you’ll want knowledge and skills to offer life-saving help. While most people only enrol in first aid courses because they need to for their work, CPR is a skill that everybody should learn, regardless of their occupation.

CPR training is all about being prepared for the unexpected, and the course itself is no exception. Having a little background and preparing can give you a head start on your training and help you knock it out of the park.

How Should I Prepare for CPR Training?

Earning a CPR certification might seem like a challenge. A day of learning and a practical assessment might feel daunting, and if you’re doing first aid training too then there are a lot of topics your course will cover.

The good news is that there’s not a lot of research you’ll need to do ahead of time to be prepared. While you’ll be sent some online readings to do ahead of time, there’s no prior first aid knowledge or experience you need to enrol. First aid and CPR skills are open for all to learn.

The best thing you can do to prepare to learn CPR is just to get a good night’s sleep and eat something beforehand. Physical practice can be tiring, so bring a water bottle and wear comfortable clothes you can kneel and move around in.

What Will You Learn In A HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Course?

7 steps of CPR

In your CPR certification course, you’ll learn through a mix of hands-on practical training, theory, and instruction from your trainer. Topics covered include:

When To Call For Help

You’ll learn how to recognise when someone needs CPR, such as when they’re unconscious and not breathing normally, as well as when to call 000 and what information to provide operators, such as your location, what’s happened, and the person’s condition.

How To Perform CPR

You’ll learn the correct technique for cardiopulmonary resuscitation, including proper hand placement, compression depth and rate, and rescue breathing, as well as special considerations for infants and children.

How To Use An AED (Automated External Defibrillator)

You’ll learn how to operate an AED, including how to turn on the device, follow voice prompts, place electrode pads on the victim’s chest, safety checks to ensure no one is touching the victim, and how to combine AED use with CPR for the best chance of survival.

If you’re looking at training for work, keep in mind that most workplace policies specify which qualification they require, so check your employee handbook or ask your supervisor about which one you need.

CPR Course Refresher Training

Cost of a CPR course

CPR certificates expire after 12 months in line with Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines. Getting it renewed requires taking a CPR refresher course. Both CPR and first aid refresher training are basically the same as your first one, just with any new information that’s been updated in the meantime. The biggest difference between the two is that first aid certificates only need refresher training every three years.

There’s no legal requirement to hold a valid CPR certificate, Good Samaritan laws protect anyone who wants to try and help in an emergency. But CPR, like all skills, gets rusty without regular practice. A refresher training course helps keep your skills second nature so when the worst happens you can act without stopping to remember the steps.

Get Prepared to Help in Any Emergency

When you complete your HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation training, you’ll walk away with life-saving skills that could make the difference in an emergency. Whether it’s a family member, colleague, or stranger who needs help, you’ll have the confidence and knowledge to act when it matters most.

Don’t wait until you need these skills to learn them. Book your CPR certification today and be prepared for the unexpected.

Blunt Abdominal Trauma First Aid Guide: How to Treat Abdominal Injuries

Abdominal trauma first aid is a simple way for anyone to treat a complex injury.
